“Ninety-nine years ago this month, a tragic fire (known as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire) in an unsafe garment factory in New York City killed 148 workers — most of them young women and girls — and galvanized the movement to organize workers and strengthen labor law enforcement. Just last month, 21 workers died in a garment factory in Bangladesh producing for major multinational retailers under conditions that were frighteningly similar to that historic fire in New York. The movement for worker rights and against sweatshop conditions has achieved significant victories for workers over long years of struggle, but there is much more work ahead to ensure that all workers’ rights are guaranteed.
The International Labor Rights Forum (ILRF) and SweatFree Communities (SFC) have been working for years to improve conditions and prevent tragedies like the ones that occured in factories in New York and Bangladesh. We are now pleased to announce that SFC and ILRF will be joining forces in a new collaboration that we hope will strengthen our advocacy efforts to create a sweatfree world.”
